Big Cypress National Preserve:


FL 997/US 41 junction is 4 or 5 miles west of Miami.

Shark Valley section of Everglades National Park is 17 miles west of the junction on US 41.

From Shark Valley follow US 41 west 30.9 miles and turn right onto CR839 and continue on this washer board dirt road 20 miles to the campground. Open all year, primitive camping no facilities, all year. Three designated, primitive campgrounds: Bear Island (40 sites), Pink Jeep (9 sites) and Gator Pit (9 sites). Pink Jeep and Gator Pit require an Off-Road Vehicle Permit to access. Access to the Bear Island area is along a secondary gravel road. more info.

From Shark Valley follow US 41 west 3.6 miles and turn left at the smallish sign for the Loop Road.  Follow the Loop Road 6.2 miles and turn left into the Mitchell's Landing camping area.  Free, 15 sites, Porti-Potti, trash bins, airboat launch, all year. Note: There is an artesian well after turning onto Loop Road. There is a boat ramp on the right side of US 41 just past Loop Road. more info.

From Shark Valley follow US 41 west 22.0 miles and turn left into the campground or from it's junction with SR 29/CR29 (3 miles north of Everglades City) take US 41 east 15.4 miles and turn left into the campground.  restrooms, drinking water, RV and Tent sites $16.00 per night / $8.00 with Senior or Access Pass. Campers are allowed to use the Dona Drive or Midway Campground dump station at no cost, while staying in preserve. 26 RV sites $19, 10 tent sites, $16, dump 12/15 thru 4/15, otherwise free, flush toilets, water, cold showers (outside), trash bins, Turner River is about 9 miles away, Halfway Creek about 12 miles and Everglades City about 20 miles. more info.

From Shark Valley follow US 41 west 3.6 miles and turn left at the smallish sign for the Loop Road.  Follow the Loop Road 5.5 miles and turn right camping area.  Free, 10 primitive sites, Porti-Potti, trash bins. more info.

Boat Launches:

Turner River: From Shark Valley follow US 41 west 28.9 miles and turn right at the boat launch sign at mile marker 50 or from it's junction with SR 29/CR29 (3 miles north of Everglades City) take US 41 east 5.4 miles and turn left.

Halfway Creek: From Shark Valley follow US 41 west 31.7 miles (.2 miles past park headquarters) and turn left or from it's junction with SR 29/CR29 (3 miles north of Everglades City) take US 41 east 2.3 miles and turn left. Follow road .5 miles to end and launch area.

Halfway Creek: From Everglades City, launch at the canoe launch behind the Everglades National Park Visitor Center, turn east (left) and go .5 miles to the bridge over CR 29.


Biscayne National Park:

  No entrance fee.  Concession boat to ferry kayak, $35.95 round trip.  Permit required from park services.  Snorkel tour, $35, 3 hours, equipment included.
Camping Areas:
  Everglades National Park, Long Pine Key Campground is 25 miles from Biscayne National Park.  See below.
  Biscayne National Park, Boca Chita Key & Elliot Key,

Dry Tortugas National Park:

$3.00/night in the campsite "honor box".  If you're taking a glass boat, watch it carefully as they put it in the storage bin (they kind of throw the plastic boats in).

Jabour's Campground in downtown Key West (can walk to Duval St.) is pretty good, though their rates must be about $50 now.   305-294-5723

From US 1: the main park entrance is 12 miles southwest of Homestead/Florida City. Follow state road 9336 to the park entrance. Flamingo campground is 38 miles southwest of the main park entrance. $16, 234 drive-in sites, 65 pull-through sites, no hookups, 64 walk-in sites, drinking water, flush toilets, dump, boat ramps, all year. more info.

Everglades National Park, Long Pine Key, 5 miles from Homestead park entrance.  $16/night, flush toilets, water, dumpster.

Palmdale, Fisheating Creek Resort, from its junction with SR 29 take US 27 .9 miles north and turn into the camping area.  $20/night full hook-ups, $15/night primitive on water, $10/night primitive off water.  Shuttle $20 for 1 day trip pickup, $25 for 2 day trip pickup.  $2/person boat ramp charge.  Train noise and highway noise from US 27.

Fort Meyers Area:

Sanibel Island, $6 fee to cross causeway to island.  Beaches $2/hour to park.
Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge: Parking fee at visitor center, entrance fee to scenic drive and at least one canoe launch.

Camping Areas:
Alva, Caloosahatchee Regional Park, from it's junction with FL 29, follow FL 80 12 east miles to Alva.  Turn left on Broadway and cross the Calooshahatchee River.  Turn left again on FL 78 and follow 2.5 miles to the park's main entrance.  Walk in tent sites only, $12/night, flush toilets, water, cold showers outside, some enclosed, some not, hot showers by restrooms, trash cans, dumpster, boat launch.  A large group had the kayak area by the launch for 2 months and you weren't allowed to drive back there.  Horrendous airport noise all night long.  I slept in van in parking lot.  Sanibel Island is 35 miles away,

Boat Launches:
Alva, Franklin Locks, Hickey River, continue on FL 78 past Caloosahatchee Regional Park (above) for another 2.7 miles.  $24/night (RV park), $3 to launch boat.
Alva, Telegraph Creek, continue past Franklin Locks (above) for another .5 miles and park and put in on the far side of the bridge over the creek.
Alva, Caloosahatchee River, from it's junction with FL 29, follow FL 80 12 east miles to Alva.  Turn right on Broadway and cross the Calooshahatchee River.  Turn right at the boat ramp sign and continue .2 miles to boat ramp.
Fort Myers, Orange River, Manatee Park is on FL 80 just west of Fort Myers and 22 miles east of LaBelle on FL 80.
Alva, Franklin Locks is 5.4 miles east of Manatee Park on FL 80.
Alva. Caloosahatchee Regional Park, the turn off FL 80 for the park is 10.1 miles from Manatee Park.

Jensen Beach/Jupiter Inlet Aquatic Preserve:

  Camping Areas:
      Fort Pierce, Road Runner Travel Resort $25 (pay phone jack). Wasted a lot of money trying to establish and maintain a connection at a maximum of 14.4, most often connected at 12,000.

      Jupiter, West Jupiter Campgrounds $23 (modem)

John Pennkamp Coral Reef State Park:

Day use fee = 3.50 for one person, more for each additional person.  Snorkel trips: $28.95 - 1 hour out and back, 1.5 hours in the water.  Swim about 100 feet to reef, waves 1.5 feet, wind 15mph.  Snorkel, mask, flippers $6, half wetsuit $6.

  Key Largo, John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, Reservations www.reserveamerica.com only.
  Everglades National Park, Long Pine Key Campground is 35 miles from John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park..  See above.

  Notes: River 230 miles long & Some class 5 rapids.  Sturgeon appear June through August.
