Arches National Park:

Turn west on Potash Road .4 miles south of Arches National Park & 1.3 miles north of Colorado River Bridge which is just north of Moab on US191.
   A campground with 3 or 4 walkin sites @ 3.8 miles, ?/night, toilet.
   Williams Bottom Campground 5.1 miles on Potash Road. $8/night, open pit toilet, dumpster.

  Turn onto UT128 immediately south of the Colorado River Bridge. Goose Island Campground 1.4 miles & several more along

  Kings Bottom Campground: Turn onto Kane Creek Road between McDonalds & BurgerKing in the center of Moab. Go .7 miles and continue straight (do not bear right). Continue 1.8 miles to campground. $12/night, toilet, no water, no trash.
  Moonflower Canyon Campground: .1 miles past Kings Bottom Campgound. Walk-in sites only. $8/night, toilet, no water, no trash.
  Kane Springs Campground (private): 1.3 miles past Kings Bottom Campgound. Walk-in sites only. Tent/travel trailer $17/night, full hookups $27.50/night. Showers, toilet, water, no trash cans.
  Dumpster: 2.5 miles past Kings Bottom Campgound.
  Hunter Canyon Campground: 4.8 miles past Kings Bottom Campgound. Some walk-in sites, some pull-ins, some sites before Hunter Canyon, some after. $8/night, open pit toilet, no water, no trash.
  Free camping in designated campsites: 5.5 miles past Kings Bottom Campgound. No facilities.

  Flat Iron Mesa Road is 5.1 miles past the rest area (drinking water, overnight parking, trash cans, flush toilets) on US191 which is about 16 miles south of Moab. Turn right south of a group of buildings. Road goest back 11 miles. Camping at end and along the way.

Trailheads:

    Portal Overlook, 4 miles up Potash Road (UT-249) on right.

    Amasa Back Trail, Kane Creek Road at south end of Moab.  Follow it 5 miles to end of paved road.  Park at main parking lot just after paved road or continue another 1/2 mile to Amasa Back Trail parking lot.  Walk an additional 1/2 mile to signed trailhead.


Ashley National Forest:

Camping Areas: US-191 mm 376, before summit (8500 feet). Look for toilets on the right. Free, toilets, no trash pickup & no water... 16 miles from Flaming Gorge Dam.

Bryce Canyon National Park:

Camping Areas:

  Showers and Laundromat at the General Store in the park and at Ruby's RV place outside the park ($3).  I returned mid-November and Ruby's was closed during the week as was the bus service.  Winter water at the campground (insulated water pipes).  Ruby's was open in mid-April.

  Free camping throughout Dixie National Forest and BLM land.

  I found some free camping 4-5 miles north on UT 63

Mule Canyon between mile markers 102 & 103 on UT-95.

UT-261 50 feet from UT-95 junction.

From UT-261 at MP 19 turn east on Cigarette Springs Road, travel 3.4 miles past the unsigned Lime Canyon Road on the right and turn left on the unsigned road a few yards past.  100 feet in brings you to several campsites.

From UT-261 at MP 19 turn west away from Cigarette Springs Road, travel 2.6 miles to an unsigned junction and make a right.  Continue 3 miles and bear right at a junction with a county road.  Turn right after 1.9 miles at signed junction.  1.2 miles to trailhead.  The last .7 miles require high clearance.  Some camping spots on slickrock. 

Trailheads:

Mule Canyon between mile markers 102 & 103 on UT-95.  Park at turnoff .5 miles from UT-95.

Kane Gulch: Trailhead beside the outhouse at the Kane Gulch Ranger Station at UT-261 MP 29.

Road Canyon: from UT-261 at MP 19 turn east on Cigarette Springs Road, travel 3.4 miles past the unsigned Lime Canyon Road on the right and turn left on the unsigned road a few yards past.  Trailhead straight ahead past the campsites.

Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park:

Free air & water at Chevron station in Mt Carmel.

From Kanab, go 6.3 miles north on US 89 & turn left on Sand Dunes Road. Go 10 miles to BLM camping area 2 miles before park. Probably won't be able to turn a rig around beyon park.
From Mount Carmel Junction (outside of Zion National Park) go south 2 miles or so on US 89 & turn right on to Sand Dunes Road. Go 12 miles to state park entrance on the left.
5 minutes to Coral Pink Sandunes State Park, about 30 minutes to Zion National Park, 90 minutes to Bryce Canyon National Park, 90 minutes to Lake Powell.
06-14-11: Only one 5th wheel there on a Wednesday. Memorial day was full. Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park: $6 entrance fee, $18/night, showers, water, sewage. Don't know if entrance fee included with camping fee.
Ponderosa BLM Campground: From US89 go 8.0 miles on Sand Dunes Road & turn left on to Hancock Road. Go 1.9 miles to campground on left. $5/night, toilet, trah cans, no water.
BLM lands outside of state park. Lots of ATV roads might hold some camping. Very sandy.

  Pine Lake Campground, from it's junction with UT12 in Ruby's Inn (entrance to Bryce Canyon National Park) turn north (away from Bryce) & go 10.4 miles on Johns Valley Road. Turn right on FR132 (washerboard road) and go 5.2 miles to campground. Was open eary May. Toilets open, but water was shut off. Snow still on the ground. No fee in early May. Lots of other camping along FR132.

06-19-11: Stopped by on Sunday. Didn't see the actual dump site.

Dumpsters @ mile 6.0 on SR153.

SR153 is a steep paved road from mile 10 to 22. From mile 22 to Junction is a dirt road and was still closed mid-June. Dispersed camping all along SR153.

Camped 06-15-11: Great views of mountain crags, stream across road, paved road & aprons. Aprons are pretty level. more info.

FR137 is mostly a fairly steep washer board road.

1st 2 miles past Little Reservoir Campground is private land.

Visited 06-16-11: Nice looking campground with a couple of sites right on the lake. Lots of good dispersed camping around both lakes. more info.

I15 X146 then from it's junction with SR133 just south of Kanosh go 5 miles on FR106 to campground sign. $12, 8 sites w/3 pull throughs, tents, campers, vans, etc. for other sites, 16 day limit, flush & vault toilets, water spigots (not threaded), no trash pickup, May 15-Sept 15.
Camped 06-20-11: Several side roads leading to creek and/or camp sites. Couple of dispersed camping areas 1 mike beyond campground.

06-21-11: I15 X156 then I couldn't find FR106. Only spent 2 minutes looking.

Holden
Maple Hollow Campground (8800 ft)
Fishlake National Forest

I15 X174 then right on Maple Hollow Road (FR098) for about 6 miles. Free, several walkin sites. No room for RVs, 16 day limit, vault toilet, no water, no trash. May-Oct.
Visited 06-21-11: Steady climb of 5%-9% on good gravel road. A little narrow farther up.

Oak City

From it's junction with Main Street take Center Street (FR089) east for 4.3 miles to campground sign. 19 family sites, 4 group sites, $10, 35ft RV limit, 14 day limit, vault toilets, drinking water (threaded spigots), May 15-Sept 15.


Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area:

Camping Areas:

There are about 20 campgrounds around the reservoir.  The only two I checked were $13 & $15.  Mustang Ridge had showers.  I found some free campsites on the dirt road just past Mustang Ridge and many more at mile marker 245 on UT 191.

I stayed in the Ashley National Forest on UT 44 while paddling Sheep Creek Bay.

Jug Hollow off UT-191 has lots of free campsites near the water.

Boat Boat Launches:

The free Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area map shows lots of put ins.  (Visitor Center at the dam)

Jug Hollow off UT-191 has lots of possibilities for launching.  Must hand carry 100-300 feet depending on water levels.  Seems to be 1-2 days good paddling here.  Lots of camping and paddling opportunities all along the eastern shore, including up in Wyomin.

  Page, AZ, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Waweap, about 4 miles west of Page, AZ. $?, a lot of sites, most seemed to have hookups, toilets, water, dump station, boat ramp.

  Page AZ, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Lone Rock, about 10 miles west of Page, AZ just inside Utah border on US 89.   $10, Dispersed Camping, Free Camping, toilets, water at dump station, cold outside showers.  Beach camping, lots of lose sand to get stuck in so be careful. Lots of wind too. Camped 05/2011.

  Hanksville, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area Bullfrog Basin Stanton Creek Primitive Camping Area $6/person/night-max $12/vehicle/night. Toilets, dumpsters, water @ Offshore Marina gas station, Bullfrog gas station.

  Hite, just east of the UT-95 bridge over the Colorado River behind big stone (free)

  Hite, UT-95 west of Hite between mile markers 31 and 32 (free)

  Bitter Springs, AZ, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Lees Ferry, from it's junction with US89 near Bitter Springs take US89A west for about 9-10 miles. Turn right at the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area Lees Ferry sign and go 3-4 miles to the campground. $12, 51 sites, several pull throughs, flush toilets, water (hand pump), no trash pickup.
Visited 10/02/11.

Trailheads:

Wahweap Creek Hoo Doo Trail: US-89, between mm 6 & 7 in Big Water, Utah, turn onto Ethan Allen Road directly across from the visitor center. Follow this road .6 miles to the end and turn left at the 'T'. Follow this road 2.3 miles to a corral. Turn left in front of the corral and go 100 yards to turn outs on the left and right of the road just before dipping down into the Wahweap creekbed. Turn left into the creekbed and go north 4 miles to first set of hoo doos. Follow closely to wall to get through thicket of willows and the second set of hoo doos. Continue 100 yards to third set. These are the white hoo doos.

Nipple Creek Road (Road 327): Follow directions for Wahweap Creek Hoo Doo Trail (above). Instead of turning left up Wahweap creekbed, cross the creekbed and follow that road straight to the Nipple creekbed and go as far as you want.

Boat Launches:

    Hog Canyon Trailhead, UT-95 west of Hite between mile markers 33 and 34.

    Butler Canyon Trailhead, UT-95 west of Hite between mile markers 31 and 32.


Goblin Valley State Park:

From I70, exit 147, 9 miles west of Green River, take UT24 south 24 miles to mm136. Turn right at the state park sign and go 5 miles to a wayside. Turn left and go 7 miles to Goblin Valley. Or continue straight .4 miles to the free Temple Mountain Group Camp Area (a big parking lot with 2 toilets). Continue another mile or so to the free Temple Mountain Campgrounds with another 2 toilets. Some decent dispersed camping along the way also.


Grand Staircase National Monument:

Water at visitor centers in Big Water, Cannonville and Kanab.

Camping:

   Free permit required for overnight camping.

   North of Escalante at mile 70-71 and 83-84 on UT-12.

   North of Escalante - Calf Creek Campground at mile 75 on UT-12.  $7/night $2/day use fee.  Water and toilets.


Cottonwood Canyon Road:

   Big Water, Cottonwood Canyon Road, from the Arizona/Utah border west of Page, AZ, continue on US 89 to mm 17.5 and turn right onto Cottonwood Canyon Road.

Camping & Hiking:

   Free permit required for overnight camping.

  Go 1.4 miles on Cottonwood Canyon Road and turn right.  Go .8 miles to a spur on the right. Hoo doos in valley below.

Mile /N3.5 = Oyster beds.
Mile /N11.5 = The Box hiking trail.
Mile S31.6/N14.2 = Hackberry Canyon & Yellow Rock trailheads.
Mile S27.6-31.6/ = 7 campsites along spur roads.
Mile S21.5/N23.4 = Cottonwood Canyon Narrows trailhead (south)
Mile S20.5/N24.4 = Cottonwood Canyon Narrows trailhead (north) In the valley between two steep saddles find a parking area with room for a few cars. Find a trailhead sign on the other side of the road. Campsite on top of north saddle.

  Boulder Mail Trail to Death Hollow, north of Escalante turn left at mile 84 on UT-12 onto Hells Backbone Road.  Turn left at .01 miles.  Follow .07 miles to trailhead.

Trailheads:

  Forty Mile Ridge, from the Hurricane Wash/Willow Tank sign at mile 33.8 on Hole-In-The-Rock Road continue 2.2 miles to an signed road on the left to Forty Mile Ridge.  Turn onto this road and drive 4.3 miles and then left and continue .1 miles to a large steel water tank and the parking area.

  Willow Gulch, from the Sooner Wash sign at mile 40.5 on Hole-In-The-Rock Road continue 1.0 miles to an unsigned road on the left.  Turn onto this road and drive 1.4 miles to the trailhead.

  Fifty Mile Creek, from the Sooner Wash sign at mile 40.5 on Hole-In-The-Rock Road continue 4.8 miles to a cattle guard.  Fifty Mile Wash is at the bottom of the hill.  Park on the dirt road immediately before the wash.

  Davis Gulch, from the Glen Canyon National Recreation sign at mile 46.2 on Hole-In-The-Rock Road continue 4.1 miles to the last cattle guard crossing.  Davis Gulch is the little wash on the left .2 miles from the cattle guard (it soon changes to a deep slot canyon).

  Hole-In-The-Rock, from the Glen Canyon National Recreation sign at mile 46.2 on Hole-In-The-Rock Road continue 4.5 miles and then park and camp in the slick rock areas and follow the 4WD road to Hole-In-The-Rock.


Johnson Canyon Road:

Free camping permit required.

Paria Canyon:

Trailheads:

  From the Arizona/Utah border west of Page, AZ, continue on US 89 to mm 21.0 and turn left into the Paria Contact Station.  Turn left again onto the Paria Canyon Road and go 2.2 miles to the trailhead.  ($5/day entrance fee, toilet).

  Buckskin Trailhead, continue past the Paria Contact Station (above) and turn left at the signed Whitehouse Valley Road at mm 25.6 of US 89.  This is a rough, stony, washer board road.  Turn left at the signed trailhead at about 6.0 miles.  ($5/day entrance fee, toilet).

  Wire Pass Trailhead, continue past the Paria Contact Station (above) and turn left at the signed Whitehouse Valley Road at mm 25.6 of US 89.  This is a rough, stony, washer board road.  Turn right at the signed trailhead at 8.5 miles.  ($5/day entrance fee, toilet).


Paria Townsite:

  From the Arizona/Utah border west of Page, AZ, continue on US 89 to mm 30.6 and turn right onto the signed Paria Canyon Road.  Go 4.6 miles the townsite.  (Toilet).  Continue 1.1 miles to the end of the road.


Rim Rocks:

  Rim Rocks, from the Arizona/Utah border west of Page, AZ, continue on US 89 to mm 19.4 and turn right into the unsigned parking area.  A power line runs perpendicular to the highway at this point.  The trail is off the right and follows above a wash for 1.5 miles to the hoo doos.  A second small parking area is at mm 20.4 directly across from the entrance to Paria Campground.


White Rocks:

Trailheads:

  White Rocks, from the Arizona/Utah border west of Page, AZ, continue on US 89 to mm 12.8 and turn right onto an unsigned red dirt road.  Follow this road about 3.2 miles to the Wilderness Study Area.  No vehicles permitted beyond this point.  It's another two miles to the end of the road.  Note: Scout the wash at 2.2 miles to see if you want to attempt it.  I chose not to.  I turned around in the wash and parked along side the road.


Hovensweep National Monument:

From Cortez, CO take US 160 south for 2.5 miles. Turn right at the stop light and the Hovenweep sign. Go 28 miles and turn right again at another Hovenweep sign. Go 4 miles and turn right at still another Hovenweep sign. Go 5.5 miles and turn right once again at the Hovenweep sign. Go .5 miles to the visitor center.

Hovenweep Campground: Water at campground and visitor center, trashcans, flush toilets, $10/night.

Notom Road:

Notom Road runs 66 miles from just east of Capitol Reef National Park on UT-24 to UT-276 at Bullfrog Basin on Lake Powell.  The 1st 10 miles are paved, the next 30 rough washer board and the last 25 are pretty good except for the numerous washes that must be crossed.  Low clearance vehicles OK.

Camping Areas:

  Cedar Mesa Campground, Notom Road mile 21.  Free.

  A fair amount of dispersed camping opportunities the first 10-15 miles of Notom Road.  Less after that,

  Some dispersed camping on the Scenic Backway between UT-276, mile 34.4 and Notom Road.

  Some dispersed camping in the first mile on the Burr Trail Road between Lower and Upper Muley Twist Canyon Trailheads and on the access road to Upper Muley Twist Canyon.

  Upper Muddy Creek Gorge Trail, from Hidden Splendor Airfield, hike downstream on Muddy Creek.

  Muddy Creek Chute Trail, from Hidden Splendor Airfield, hike upstream on Muddy Creek.

  Mud Canyon, from Hidden Splendor Airfield, hike upstream on Muddy Creek and turn into 2nd canyon on right.

  Chimney Canyon, from Hidden Splendor Airfield, hike upstream on Muddy Creek 4 miles and turn left into Chimney Canyon.

  Spotted Wolf Canyon, I-70 mile 143 rest stop.

  Three Fingers Canyon,  turn west off UT-24 at mile about mile 158.

  Eardley Canyon/Straight Wash, turn west off UT-24 at mile 148, about 12 miles south of I-70.  I hit deep ruts on a hill at 1.3 miles and couldn't go any farther. 


San Rafael Swell:

Castle Dale section:

The (unsigned) Green River Cutoff Road is between mile markers 39-40, just east of Castle Dale off UT-10.  It is 12 miles to the Lawrence to Tan Seeps Road.

Camping Areas:

  A few (sandy) campsites beyond the Upper San Rafael River Gorge Trailhead (see below).

  Wedge Overlook, go straight at the junction and continue 6 miles to the end.  Many campsites.

   Buckhorn Wash, go straight thru the junction and make a right in two miles.  Many campsites the 10 miles before the San Rafael River Bridge.

  Just after the San Rafael River Bridge is the San Rafael River BLM Campground.  $6/night, toilet, no water.

  Turn left just before the San Rafael River Bridge.  A free campground is on Mexican Mountain Road.

  Some more camping on Mexican Mountain Road past the free campground and a couple of parking areas at the end of the road.  Not much in between.

Trailheads.

  Upper San Rafael River Gorge Trail, turn right at the junction and then right again in 200 yards.  Follow this unsigned road 4 miles to the end at Fuller Bottom and the trailhead.

  Upper San Rafael River Gorge Trail, turn right 1/4 miles past the San Rafael River Bridge and continue 1/2 mile to parking areas.

  Box Canyon Trails, about mile 8 & mile 10 & at the end of Mexican Mountain Road (see camp areas above).

  Horse Thief Pass Trail, at the end of Mexican Mountain Road (see camp areas above).

  Black Dragon Canyon Trail, take the gated dirt road at mile 143.5 off I-70 west (there is no access from the eastbound side.  Go to exit 147 and turn back west).  Continue 1 mile and turn into Black Canyon Wash and park.  Or the feeble and the lazy can drive through the canyon with low clearance 2WD.

Several campsites along UT18 around mile 15.

Visited 08-01-11: This is really a large dispersed site they slapped a4.1 miles up South n iron ranger in & now charge money for.

Water available at guard station about 4.1 miles up South SWillow Road.

Visited 08-01-11: This campground is down a steep, narrow dirt road. I just viewed what I could see from above. I doubt its suitable for RVs. There is also a Boy Scout & a group camp in this area.
