08/08/02 Hiking Morrell Falls National Recreation Trail (4.6 miles round trip):
I'm on my way to Glacier National Park. Different people told me it's not uncommon for heavy snowfall in mid or even early September. So I decided to get up there early, see what I shall see and be ready to head out if the snows do come.
Haven't done much of anything the past few days so when I saw a sign for a National Recreation Area in the Lolo National Forest I decided to check it out. Other signs led me to the Morrell Falls National Recreation Trail and off I went.
The first mile or so is through a lodge pole pine forest and is perfectly flat. The rest of the trail has some ups and downs with a 1/4 mile section of ups right in the middle. A trail description says I'd see 26 acre Morrell Lake but I dunno what they did with it. All I saw was a couple of small lakes or ponds.
Morrell Falls drops 100 feet or so over a couple of ledges. An adequate amount of water was coming over the falls and was worth a couple of pictures. It rained yesterday so I guess that helped some. Been pretty cold and foggy too, temperature in the 50's all day.
08/09/02 Hiking Holland Falls Trail (3 miles round trip):
This is a pleasant walk through the woods to a nice falls. I was supposed to have passed acre Holland Lake but only saw a couple of large ponds on the way. The trail turned upwards the last .25 miles but ended right at the base of Holland Falls. A fair amount of water poured from the 50-75 foot falls making the trip worth while.
