04/30/08 Hiking Grand Staircase National Monument, Utah
(Cottonwood Canyon Road)

04/30/08:Hiking Cottonwood Canyon Narrows (North): (3 miles round trip)

This is an easy trail through a pretty canyon with 200+ walls. There's a small parking area about mile 12.2 from Kodachrome State Park. The trailhead is right across the road from the parking area. The canyon walls are pretty narrow at the begining but soon widen some. The canyon bottom is all sand so there's some slogging involved.

I turned back at 1+ miles when I came to what my guide says is a class 4 scramble. I don't like scrambling under normal conditions and I wasn't about to do any now.

05/01/08:Hiking Cottonwood Canyon Wash: (as far as you want to go)

Big time winds last night and temperatures dropped into the 20's at 5000 feet... and to think a few weeks ago I couldn't stand multiple days in a row of 90+ temperatures in Arizona.

Drove a mile past the Hiking Cottonwood Canyon Narrows Trailhead (North). Turns out this is the Hiking Cottonwood Canyon Narrows Trailhead (South). I walked into the canyon and found the class 4 scramble area so turned around right there and continued down the wash.

More slogging through sand again. Nice red and white sandstone cliffs to the west. I followed the wash for an hour and turned back.
